Ex votos: Now and Then

ΕΝ/ΕΛΛ Ancient Greek ex-votos to please the deity and ask for a favor (left) and contemporary Greek ex-votos to thank God and ask for a favor (right). The persons depicted in the first series are 6th century BC ceramic makers of Corinth offering sacrifice to their city patron Poseidon, while the modern ex-votos refer to an eventual ailment the worshipper prays to deity to cure or has been already cured and the tablet serves as a „thank you note“.

Griechenland – Krisenland.

Leave your crisis in Greece (English)

athen

In the sixth year of a major political, social and financial crisis Greece remains an inexhaustible and fascinating source of inspiration for artists, designers, crafters and art lovers. No matter how often you have visited Greece, there is still a lot to learn from its rich arts and crafts tradition, people’s interaction and core values such as sharing, arguing, communicating.

We call our curated trip and workshop series „Leave your Crisis in Greece“, because we believe that the country and its culture, people and landscape always have an answer to give to your existential questions: Who am I? What do I want from life? How do I want to live?

Talking, sharing, being straight and empathetic, arguing and forgiving are Greek qualities that impress visitors and guests. This is the way of cultivating and advancing both friendship and trade relations in Greece.

We call the trip and workshop series we designed „curated“, for we wish you to find in Greece exactly what you are looking for in art and life. Our workshops and excursions update the teachings of mythology in the original places where the legend was born and connect it to jewellery and textile..

Our program addresses artists, designers and art lovers who look for the living traces of a great ancient culture, as well as for inspiration, eternal values and alternative life concepts or even wish to discover professional opportunities in Greece.

TEXTILE LOVERS: LEAVE YOUR CRISIS IN GREECE!

When Ali Baba opened ‚Sesame‘, he entered a well organized treasury divided into various compartments: one filled with precious stones, one filled with silver and gold, one with the most luxurious delicatessen and one filled with precious textiles.

Distinction, honors and decoration of diplomats, generals or bureaucrats through allowances of precious textiles is a well documented custom of the Roman empire (pagan and Christian) as well as the Middle Eastern world order. In a sense, today’s ‚military decorations‘ are a leftover of the same concept.

1001 nights, the book which enchanted me again this summer, speaks of the special place textile holds in the Harun al-Rashid’s 8th century Bagdad.
We read how the leader of the faithful takes off his magnificent clothes and disguised in a person of lower rank strolls through the streets of his capital at night to find out what his sycophants would never tell him on how his people fare. A practice to recommend to present day leaders – in the east and the west.

Dressed like a Greek fighter of the War of Independence is a picture of Lord Byron we are familiar with.

The gold thread adorned vest exclusively made by male embroiderers is not only a charming garment but also serves as a shield. Epirus was the metropolis of tailoring and dress embroidery until appr. the early 20th century. There are recounts on the capital Janena’s wealth calculated in tailors‘ heads and needles.

What we usually ignore is that romantic poet and philhellene Lord Byron who died in besieged Messologi in 1824 was probably the only aristocratic supporter of the ‚luddite cause‘. Bloody riots shook the English establishment in early 19th century, when desperate loom workers plagued by unemployment and hunger destroyed the engine looms that replaced them. It is interesting to note that luddites did not only murder sheriffs or representatives of law and order, but also killed grocers and food traders.

The development of new techniques like screen printing or chemical devore’replacing embroidery and lace making respectively and the price decrease of the once extremely valuable good, turned hand made textile obsolete, but opened the door to those modern artists who followed William Morris‘ manifesto and from the 1920s onwards elevated the former craft into a new art form.

You may learn more on the history of textile, the ways to navigate through it, as well as more on how modern creativity deals with archaic concepts, at the workshop series we are preparing for Autumn/Winter 2017 under the title

‚LEAVE YOUR CRISIS IN GREECE‘.

For Greece is the most inspiring place for art lovers and textile aficionados/as.
